skirts! and ironing

Lots of fun has been had this week making some sweet skirts!  Especially pockets…oh, how I love pockets…

These little cuties are coming along to this Saturday’s market in Trevallyn (10am to 2pm at Max Fry Hall, for any locals who have some spare time tomorrow!).  All approximately size 7 (would probably fit age 6 –9ish) and fully reversible, and of course all with splendid pockets!  It was getting dark by the time I finished up sewing the last one (I know it sounds like I put in long days…but it was actually only 4pm on a super grey, wet day) so I’ll post some better photos soon.

This little pink and green skirt was a custom order for a very special little birthday girl.

Skirts are so much fun to make…I’m really enjoying experimenting with the details.  I’d like to make some with detachable apron fronts next.  Hopefully other people out there like them too!

And now for the grumbly bit.  I spend lots of time ironing…just as much time as I spend at the sewing machine.  I have a gorgeous ironing board which makes the job so much easier, but I don’t have a super-duper iron to match.  I inherited my current iron from a dear friend, and it has been great.  Until it started leaking everywhere!  Now I can’t iron anything without ending up in floods of water and practically no steam.

This is my lovely ironing board (obviously not in my home as I don’t have any spaces big enough to take a photograph this white…but it is exactly the same.  Apart from the huge wet patches on mine from my leaking iron.  Grrrr.)

So I need to buy a new iron.  But where to start?!  I know I need a steam iron, and it has to be heavy duty because it will be used everyday.  So I need some help from any ironing enthusiasts out there…do you have an iron you love?  Or one you hate?  Anything I should look out for?  I’d love to hear from you!

Niche and re-stocking

Thanks to everyone who came to Niche in Hobart on Saturday!  It was lovely to meet some new customers, and to also see some people who were returning for more happy nest goodies.

Getting some last minute sewing done!  (that must be my serious sewing face.  Or possibly my ‘can-you-tell-I-got-up-at-5am-face?’)

And as I always hoard before a market, I have lots of lovely new goodies on madeit…pop along and check them out if you need a little something for a special small person in your life…

…car wallets…

…reversible pants…(love this first pair; they have a vintage lace panel at the top – so sweet)

…birthday banners…

…and more to be listed over the next week: teethers, reversible bibs, sandwich wraps…

sunshine in a flat rate envelope

On a grey drizzly day, there’s something extra delicious about opening a parcel full of sunshiny new fabrics!

Oh! the colours…

Do you see the bee in the yellow and pink above?  And the swallows?  I just love the clever way Tula Pink hides animals in her fabrics!

I couldn’t resist this sweet baby pom pom trim…I see skirts coming up very soon.  And of course some adorable bunting fabric!  All these fabrics and trim came from here.

Lots of sewing going on in stolen moments around here…Niche All Wrapped Up Market is coming up next Saturday 27 July in Hobart and I’m hoping to have a fully stocked stall!  I’m sure some of these lovely prints will make it to the table.

enjoying the cold…and enjoying the warm

IMG_8435 (Large)

It’s been a cold start to the school holidays!

IMG_8424 (Large)

We bundled up in hats and scarves and mittens, and ventured out to take some photos of the thick frost we had one morning.  If only it was cold enough to snow!

IMG_8431 (Large)

Despite the cold, we’ve still had so much fun this week!  Lots of time with friends, lots of good books, lots of cubby-house building…

IMG_8437 (Large)IMG_8449 (Large)IMG_8456 (Large)

(I know the quality of this photo is terrible – I’ve zoomed in a long way – but, awww…cute brothers!)  Hope you’re enjoying the school holidays too!

neat and tidy = productive

I somehow feel much calmer when my fabric shelves are neat.  And more creative because sorting through the fabric gives me so many ideas!

IMG_8412 (Large)

I absolutely love colour.  So many new combinations just waiting to become something special!

IMG_8413 (Large)IMG_8421 (Large)IMG_8417 (Large)IMG_8415 (Large)

And I have been sewing with the fabric too, not just playing and dreaming!  Some memory card sets, off to Under the Oak…

IMG_8336 (Large)IMG_8329 (Large)IMG_8331 (Large)IMG_8325 (Large)

…birthday banners, and alphabet, and custom name banners…

IMG_8269 (Large)IMG_8233 (Large)IMG_8231 (Large)IMG_8192 (Large)IMG_8228 (Large)IMG_8225 (Large)

…and a sweet little reversible skirt (girl clothes!  With two boys, this is only the second skirt I’ve ever sewn that wasn’t for myself).  This was so much fun to make that I’m hoping to do some more.

I’d love some feedback about skirts – do you think there’s room for more skirts out there in the world of girly clothing?  I’m wondering about bigger sizes, say girls’ sizes 6 to 12ish?  I know there is a lot of teeny tiny sizes already available, but perhaps there’s a need for something sweet for young ladies?
